Description: This gorgeous sterling silver nut dish or bowl was made in the Cromwell pattern by Gorham sometime between 1934 and 1939. The design is very Art Nouveau with the graceful curving scroll and fan design which is echoed in the piercing of the body of the pieces. There is no date code on this nut bowl which means it was made between 1934 and 1939. Smith-Patterson Co. of Boston, MA was founded by M.N. Smith and Henry Winthrop Patterson. They were agents and importers of sterling and other items later becoming part of Jordan Marsh department stores. Condition: There are mostly fine scratches and some not as fine as shown in the enlarged photo below. There are shallow depressions or pits which aren’t uncommon in vintage or antique sterling. Having the nut dish professionally polished may improve or eliminate the spots, but in our opinion they aren’t that noticeable and once something is placed in the nut dish, no one else will ever notice. The silver markings on this piece look like vintage Italian marks but I’ve not been able to find definitive reference to them. A fine serving dish no matter, in solid .800 or 80% pure silver! Another attractive aspect of the piece is that the lid can actually be used as a second serving dish. The top handle comes off easily, with just a turn, and you have two fabulous serving pieces! A fine addition to your sterling silver serving ensemble and priced to move, don’t miss this one! Very good-excellent condition. Some slight surface marks but no dents, damage or repairs. Description 6 Piece Vintage Old Antique Gorham Sterling Silver Tea Set Over 76 Ounces of .925 Silver (70 Ounces Pure .999 Silver) NOT For Scrap Free Shipping & Insurance This is a very nice 6 piece Sterling Silver Tea set made by Gorham. I’ve weighed each piece and there is over 76 ounces of sterling silver for an actual silver total weight of 70.6 ounces in .999 silver. Assuming this, and a spot silver price of $33.99, there is $2400 in melt value alone (76.36 oz. times .925 = 70.63 Ounces, and $33.99 times 70.63 = $2400). Since the smelter pays 98% of actual ($2400 – $48 = $2352), the price, which includes free shipping and insurance is $2899.99 and I will consider offers. These are old pieces and it would be a shame to scrap them. The weight of each piece is as follows: Large Pot = 813.7 gm Small Pot = 747.4 gm Handled Bowl = 281.6 gm Bowl = 233.4 gm Cover = 48.6 gm Creamer = 250.3 gm Total Weight = 2375 gm (Divided by 31.1 g/oz = 76.36 oz) Someone asked about flaws. The handles on the pots are tight, the lids sit flush, the lids open and close smoothly. There is no pitting or deep scratches, however, there are a few dents and dings as described below and shown in the last 8 pictures with red lines pointing to the defects. There is a picture of the flaw on each of the 4 pieces without a flash and with a flash. The sugar bowl cover has a ding and a spot near it. The creamer has a ding in the side. The small pitcher has a small ding on its side. The bowl without handles has a slight dent in its side. The other 2 pieces are in excellent condition. The pictures are of the actual items you will receive. Free shipping is based on USPS Priority Mail for US shipping at 7.5 pounds. Shipping includes insurance. Because this is over 4 pounds and would require Priority International, it will be limited to US destinations only. Payment is expected within 7 days of auction end.
