This spoon is part of an exquisite inherited collection of sterling silver. *I will do the best I can with photos and descriptions to point out any flaws. If you are at all unsure, please email me with questions BEFORE you bid. It is not my intention to mislead or misrepresent these items. Many of these pieces are more than 100 years old, and will naturally have some age marks. **If you are unhappy with an item (within reason), I will refund the amount that you paid for the spoon (once I get my spoon back). Offered for auction is a fine old demitasse souvenir spoon from Ste. Anne, Canada. The finial is enameled and has a raised shield in the Maple leaf design. The enamel is in great shape, with no visible damage. The bowl is engraved with “Ste.Anne”; I believe that this is for the beautiful skiing area of Mont-Sainte-Anne in Quebec, Canada. The reverse finial is monogramed with a pretty “G”. It is marked Sterling silver and additional maker’s mark. It measures approx. 4 1/8 inches long. It weighs approx. 20 grams. Some tarnish/patina from age as indicated in photos, there is one dark spot in the bowl. This item is inherited and has been stored in a silver chest for more than 75 years. This very formal and symmetrical design features an open area a for a custom monogram that has never been engraved. The name “Chatelaine” in French refers to “a woman who owns or controls a large house”. I made the ring size 7 and I can adjust it from 7 to 10. One of several outstanding designs from my collection of rare and exotic antique silverware patterns. I have been handcrafting spoon rings since the ’70s. Some of the ornate beautiful patterns that once were commonplace are now rapidly disappearing. All of my rings are fabricated from STERLING handles that were cast 50-100 years ago. A few are older. I seek out designs that reflect artistic and design excellence. A few are true gems in their class. I also look for handles with only slight or no apparent wear. History Wallace Silversmiths Inc. began producing sterling flatware in Wallingford, Conn., in 1897. Company founder Robert Wallace was apprentice in 1839, when he was 16, to a maker of Britannia metal spoons. Two years later, he rented an old grist mill powered Connecticut’s Quinnipiac River, and started to make spoons. In 1835 Wallace learned of a new metal that had been developed in Germany. He traveled. To New York City and purchased the formula from a German chemist for $20, then converted his gristmill to produce nickel-based silver spoons. Under the name R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. The like new handle shows original crisp details with no dents, dings or scratches. The design is both exotic and erotic, featuring a topless maiden under the assault of three Cupids who are targeting her with their arrows. Above and below the figure there is rich foliage rendered in classic art nouveau style. All of this in deep relief casting, for which Wallace artisans were well known and admired. With a magnifying glass, you can make out the maiden’s dainty fingers and see the points on Cupid’s arrows! “Irian” is the historic name of part of the island Papua New Guinea. How that relates to the imagery I leave to your imagination!! Custom engraving on the inside of the handle cannot be seen when wearing the ring. This ring is among the most sought after and valued in my collection. There is no place else I know of where it can be purchased. For the discerning spoon ring afficianado! Unlike the other Phoebe listed n my store, this one was designed without the ornate background. The result is a much bolder, starker image. Which is better?? That is strictly a matter of your taste!In Greek mythology, Phoebe was one of the twelve Titans and the grandmother of Appollo. She is often considered the Moon Goddess. This rather romanticized portrayal of her includes an overhead crest (the moon?) a bunch of flower stalks at her side and a grape cluster with vine and leaves below her feet. It is a very deep relief casting, achieving a near 3-dimensional sculpted effect. It is hard to imagine that any silver artist today could design and produce a more awesome ring than this masterpiece from 113 years ago. This is truly a silverware designer’s masterpiece, and one of only a handful of well executed nude figure patterns. It is rather hefty at 7/8″ across and 18 grams weight. SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOSEXOTIC, RARE PATTERN…13/16″ ACROSS…20 GRAMS…SZ7-11This finely detailed masterpiece was first issued by Gorham in 1888. It features a pudgy cherub, head adorned with grapes and a harp in his lap. There is extensive filligree work on both sides of the handle. It is rare and well known to collectors. There is no way to know for certain exactly when this piece was cast, although its excellent condition suggests a more recent date. The Gorham trademark and “Sterling” are clearly imprinted on the back of the spoon bowl. “Versailles” was a multi-motif pattern, meaning there were several slight variations depending on which implement (fork, knife, etc.) it was on. This ring is quite hefty, so it could be somewhat overpowering for a size 7 finger. But if you like large rings, this one qualifies! PRISTINE CONDITION RARE MORNING GLORY…1″ ACROSS…8 GRAMS…SPIRAL…SIZE 7-10 This perfect Art Nouveau Morning Glory has blossoms on both sides of the handle. Very fine details of the blossom and leaves can best be appreciated with a magnifying glass. This is the only Morning Glory pattern listed in my complete list of American Silver Patterns. Artistically brilliant and finely produced. Such was the state of the art 100 years ago!! You won’t see anything like this in a jewelry store. This is the first and likely the last one I’ll offer.
